Old school hip hop song list

“Look Alive”: Aaand we’ve got more Drake. Aaand we’ve also got another somewhat subjective tonality. What we’ve got is three intervals, A and E (an A5 chord), A and D (D5/A), and B♭ and D (B♭ no fifth), and a bass line that adds an F in there (for a♭VI chord, arguably). There’s also no singing to help us establish tonality, and so I first heard it in D minor, but after repeated listening, I realized it was just my brain filling in gaps to meet my tonal bias. It would actually be truer to classify this as A Phrygian because with the A  F  D  B♭ bass line, and without any concrete triads, it’s best to leave it up to the musical scale that matches the sound, and the Phrygian scale here clicks better than anything else.

Song Facts is an excellent blog to get inspiration from — its focus is around interviews of writers that many of us pros look up to, talking about songs they’ve written, and often through a historical lens.

Modes and Key Signatures have a variety of different characteristics and are great for outside-the-box songwriting. Here’s a cheat sheet to remember them!

When saving your projects, make sure that you label them clearly so you can recall their specificities. You can also use folders to organize different projects and versions of songs. Here’s an example of how I often label my tracking projects:

That night, Steve Forbes, ex-Republican Presidential nominee candidate, hosted the show. The band tried to hang upside-down American flags on their set to make a statement about the forthcoming election but were told they could not do that by SNL executives. Being on the show was controversial as is, but in true Rage fashion, they had their roadies put the flags up anyway. Literally seconds before they went on, the SNL crew tried to take the flags down. Rage was ordered to leave immediately and did not get to play a second song.

Most closets are in the bedroom which is great. The room has soft furnishings already in it (e.g.: beds, curtains, rugs, clothes). Standing in front of the open closet is optimal or if you have a walk-in, even better. Make a part in the clothes on hangers and place your mic (whether its on a shelf or a mic stand) in between the parted clothes without letting the clothes touch the microphone. Additional blankets behind, to the sides, and above you are ideal. The goal is to absorb as many reflections from the room as possible.

In 1962, he composed “Poème Symphonique For 100 Metronomes,” in which metronomes tick at different rates and stop in different moments of the piece, creating a cloud of rhythms that dispels as the metronomes stop respectively.

Surprisingly, even medicines can affect your hydration levels. Cold and allergy medication, including decongestants and antihistamines, can have a drying effect on the body. When your mucus membranes dry out, your ability to sound good when you sing is hindered and your vocal folds are also more likely to be further irritated.

One such example is here in “Let’s Go,” where bassist Benjamin Orr does a double chromatic run in the interlude at the end of the chorus and leading into the “She’s laughing inside” verse. It’s a simple, basic riff, starting at the major third, walking up three notes to the fifth, and continuing with another four-note chromatic run up to the octave. It comes at an opportune moment, building up the suspense leading into the last set of verses, in an already high-tempo, high-energy song.

The belief that music is something you should only pursue when it’s fun, and then quitting when the going gets tough, really bothers me. But on the other hand, simply playing music as a path to success, and not because you love it, is also problematic.
